Punta del Este was a busy place on the Columbus Day weekend (which is celebrated as Dia de la Raza in Uruguay). Besides the holiday, it is the weekend that many Argentines and Brazilians come to Punta del Este to select a rental property for their summer vacation. It is also a weekend when many Argentines and Brazilians who own a vacation home in Punta del Este will meet with their property managers and make sure their property shows well for potential summer vacation tenants. Nora Ghellab, the director of Phoenix Administration, handles most of the vacation rental placement for English speakers who come to Punta del Este for the summer. Nora reports that most of the homes and apartments she manages are already booked for the month of January. Punta del Este’s summer vacation rental market is serious business. A modest apartment can cost 5000 US dollars for the month of January. A large well furnished apartment in a prime location can cost 30,000 US dollars for the month of January; and a large beach house in the most popular neighborhoods can reach prices of over 80,000 US dollars for the month of January. (Giorgio Armani reportedly paid this amount for two weeks last New Years.) If you are planning to come to Punta del Este to experience high season, now is the time to make your arrangements. If you are coming to Uruguay to look at properties for sale, January and February are not good times, because everything is occupied as a vacation rental. The best time to look at property is in the off season when things are quieter, properties are easier to preview, and the prices of accommodations and rental cars are a fraction of what they are in January and February. |
