In Uruguay's real estate industry homes are measured in square meters and land is measured in hectares. If you are accustomed to square feet and acres, here is how to make quick in-the-field conversions that will get you close. Uruguay uses the metric system. Floor area is measured in square meters (m2) and land is measured in hectares. If you are accustomed to floor area being expressed in squarefeet, the following conversion information may be of help. 1 square meter = 10.764 square feet, therefore 100 m2 = 1,076.4 square feet. For rough, in-the-field estimates you can simply multiply by 10. If an ad reports a property s 150 square meters, you can estimate it is a little more than 1,500 quare feet. 1 hectare = 2.47105381 acres. You can multiply by 2.5 for rough, in-the-field estimates. When the agent tells you the farm is on 5 hectares, you know it is a little less than 12.5 acres. Excerpt from Buying Real Estate in Uruguay.
